NOTES
Additional Information:DESIGNED IN THE COMMERCIAL VERNACULAR STYLE, THIS TWO STORY RETAIL BUILDING WAS ASSEMBLED IN 1891. (SEE BIB. REF. A). IT FEATURES A RECTANGULAR SHAPED PLAN CONFIGURATION, BRICK AND WOOD EXTERIOR WALLS, AND A SHINGLED, GABLE ROOF. A STEPPED PARAPET DISTINGUISHES THE UPPERMOST PORTION OF THE FACADE. SECOND-STORY RECTANGULAR WINDOWS, WITH BRICK LINTELS ABOVE AND BRICK SILLS BELOW, ARE SHELTERED BY STRIPED AWNINGS. A ROW OF VERTICALLY ALLIGNED BRICKS FORMS A STRING COURSE JUST ABOVE THE STOREFRONT. THE REAR AND SIDE WALLS ARE COMPOSED OF A FRAME CONSTRUCTION. THE PRESENT-DAY BRICK FACADE REPLACES THE ORIGINAL "IRON CLAD" STOREFRONT AND BAY WINDOWS. (SEE BIB. REF. B). THIS STRUCTURE IS IN GOOD CONDITION.

THIS BUILDING - HISTORICALLY KNOWN AS THE JOHN JEUCK SALOON (SEE BIB. REF. A) AND THE HENRY KEIFFER BUILDING (SEE IBB. REF. C) - WAS THE HOME OF A SALOON BUSINESS FROM 1891 TO 1900. OTHER VENTURES OCCUPYING THIS SITE AT VARIOUS TIMES INCLUDED A BAKERY IN 1917, AND AN UNSPECIFIED BUSINESS, OWNED BY GEORGE LINDSEY IN 1924. IN 1884, THIS BUILDING WAS USED AS A RESIDENCE. CURRENTLY, IT FUNCTIONS AS RETAIL SPACE FOR THE ARMSTRONG CARPET STUDIO.

THE BUILDING WAS DESIGNATED LOCALLY, BECOMING PART OF THE MINERAL POINT LANDMARK DISTRICT IN 1972.

From "A Field Guide to Mineral Point" by Nancy Pfotenhauer of the Mineral Point Historical Society, 1st Edition, 2012, Little Creek Press:
"John Jeuck came to Iowa county from Germany in 1854, when he was 25 years old, and moved to Mineral Point the following year. He owned and operated a well known beer garden next door, at 257 High, for more than 25 years. In 1891 he took down the side gabled brick building that had occupied this site since 1841 and under the direction of local architect John Charles constructed a brick building with a galvanized iron facade made by the Mesker Brothers Iron Works in St. Louis, Missouri.

P. Kieffer followed Jeuck in the saloon business, in the early 1900s. He was succeeded by Henry Kieffer who had a Sample Room at this site in the 1920s. In 1929, the Mineral Point Baking Company was here. A fire in the 1930s destroyed the facade; the building was rebuilt and has been used as a carpet supply store."

From Mineral Point Tribune, November 21, 1891:
"Mr. John Jeuck has moved into his magnificent new building, which affords a cozy home and a pleasant place of business. His saloon is equipped with all modern furniture and improvements of every kind, making it among the most attractive in the west."
