NOTES
Additional Information: THIS BRICK (NOW PAINTED) TWO-STORY HOUSE FEATURES A SLOPING ROOF, FRIEZE BOARDS AND STONE LINTELS AND SILLS. AN ENCLOSED PEDIMENTED GABLE ROOFED ENTRANCE PORTICO APPEARS IN THE GABLE END OF THE HOUSE. THERE IS A ONE-STORY EXTENSION AT THE REAR AND TO THE EAST. THE BRICK EXTERIOR HAS BEEN PAINTED.

ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE:

THIS STRUCTURE IS IMPORTANT TO THE ARCHITECTURAL VARIETY OF PLATTEVILLE AS A VERNACULAR REPRESENTATIVE OF THE GREEK REVIVAL STYLE INFLUENCE THAT WAS POPULAR IN THE EARLY PERIOD OF THE CITY'S HISTORY. ITS ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE HAS BEEN MINIMIZED BECAUSE OF THE ADDITION OF LATER WINGS.

ALTHOUGH AN EXACT DATE OF CONSTRUCTION IS UNKNOWN, IT IS KNOWN TO HAVE BEEN BUILT BEFORE 1875 AND WAS PROBABLY BUILT BEFORE 1868, WHEN IT WOULD HAVE BEEN OWNED BY N. MESSERSMITH.
