Additional Information:Parapet with corbeling; corbeling between floors; roudn arch window lintels on second floor; oriel window with molded cornice; first floor store fonrt covered. David Eulberg (1993) identified the building as a restaurant in the 1940s and 1950s. Sanborn-Perris Map Co.: 1929: front, store; rear, bake shop with oven. 1918, 1910, 1901, 1894, 1889: bakery. 1885: vacant store. Columbia Co. Treasurer: 1892-1930: Buglass & Co. 1891: no entry. The tax assessment record suggest that the building was erected ca. 1891, but the sanborn maps and directories indicate an earlier date. The building was likely built between 1886 and 1889. Directories: 1955: (224) Koffee Kup and Clean Towel Service of Portage (Johnson Printing Co.). 1929: (224) Bulgass & Co. Bakery (Smith-Baumann Directory Co.). 1927-28, 1924-25, 1921: Buglass, David, bakery and restaurant (R.L. Polk & Co.). 1919-20: Buglass Baking Co., R.G. Buglass, pres. (R.L. Polk & Co.). 1917-20: (224) D. Buglass & Co., Bakers, David Buglass (Farrell). 1917-18, 1915-16, 1913-14, 1911-12: Buglass Baking Co., R.G. Buglass, pres. and Buglass, D. & Co., David Buglass and Peter Crockoft, bakers (R.L.Polk & CO.). 1910: (224) Buglass & Co., D.; also Buglass Baking Co., 312 E. Pleasant (Voshardt); also advertised as Buglass, D. & Co., bakery and lunch room at 224. 1909-10: Buglass, D. & Co. with David and also Robert G. Buglass, baker (R.L. Polk & Co.). 1908-09: (224) Buglass, David, baker (S.H. Moore). 1905-06, 1903-04, 1901-02, 1897-98, 1895-96: David Buglass & Co., with Peter Cockroft, baker (R.L. Polk & Co.). 1893-94: Buglass, D. & R. David and Robert G., leading bakers and confectioners (R.L. Polk & Co.). 1890: Buglass, David and Robert, bakers, W.S. Wisconsin, 7s Cook (Wright). 1886: D. Buglass and D. Buglass, Sr., bakers on cook (Rockwood and Goodell). David Buglass, SR. who arrived in Portage in 1882 conducted a bakery and boarding house until 1887. At least part of that time, he operated the business with his son on Cook Street. ALthough he departed in 1887, David Buglass, Jr. and his brother Robert G. Buglass continued the bakery and ocnfectionary business of their father as D. & R. Buglass between 1887 and 1894. By 1892, they purchased 224 E. Wisconsin (24/28) which had been erteced between 1886 and 1889. In July, 1894, Robert purchased the business from his brother and in December of 1894 sold the business back to his brother. After the brothers dissolved the partnership, David Buglass carried on the business as David Buglass & Co. with Peter Cockroft as baker. In 1908, Robert re-established himself in the bakery business incorporating it as R.G. Buglass Baking Company in 1909. He located at 314 E. Pleasant (36/29). By 1910, David Buglass also operated a lunch room in conjunction with his bakery. The two brothers operated separate businesses at the same locations through 1917. The Robert G. Buglass Baking Company ceased operations shortly after 1921. David Buglass continued his bakery and restaurant at 224 W. Wisconsin through 1930 (Portage Public Schools 1948-51; Jones 194 [2]: 620-21).
