| Additional Information: | The former Thomas Frawley Residence is a large clapboard dwelling located on the southeast corner of S. Farwell Street and Marston Avenue. The irregularly massed structure is distinguished by a mansard roof with straight sides, small, decorated entrance porches, and a tower-like element accented by a dormer window. Thomas F. Frawley was one of Eau Claire's prominent lawyers. Born near Troy, New York in 1851, Frawley entered the University of Wisconsin in 1872. Upon his graduation in 1875 he moved to Eau Claire where he served as principal of the city's high school until 1880. In 1880 he was admitted to the bar and subsequently abandoned his educational position and entered the law profession. From 1881 to 1884 Frawley was a member of the firm of Frawley, Hendrix, and Brooks; from 1884 to 1888 he practiced alone and in the following year he was in partnership with his brother, W.H. Frawley (307 Niagara, 1L/18). From August, 1889, to August, 1890, he was associated with H.H. Hayden as a member of the firm of Hayden and Frawley. For the next seven years, Frawley had no partner, but in 1897 became a partner in the firm of Frawley, Bundy, and Wilcox. In addition to his professional pursuits, Frawley played an active role in area politics. He was a member of the Common Council for ten years and for many years a member of the Board of Education. He was also a representative of the Democratic National Convention in 1888 and a prominent member of the State's Democratic Party. His business ventures included an interest in the Chippewa Valley Bank and the Eau Claire Light and Power Company. Thomas Frawley died in 1902 (B). He is first listed at this address in 1890. |
