| Additional Information: | Related buildings: OU 26/13, 14, 17, 19, 20. Additional map codes are: 11/31-35,37. The J.A. Kimberly Memorial is a two-story, cow-hip roofed, rectangular structure constructed of rusticated random ashlar limestone veneer resting or a high basement of smooth coursed ashlar limestone. The roof is clad in slate. The building has architecturally treated front and side elevations. The front is a symmetrical composition of three bays each flanking a slighly projecting central section fronted by a pedimented, two-story tall tonic portico. A clock face is centered in the pediment. The portico shelters the central double leaf door with its broken pediment surround. The flanking wings of three bays each have first roof arched windows with double-hung Gothic sash and paneled spandrel panels surmounted by 8 over 8 double hung retangular windows on the second floor. The second window sills rest on a thin, molded limestone belt course that girds the building. Above the splayed stove lintels of the second story windows is simple wooded modillion eaves cornice. The square cupola resting on a square balustraded puruth has multi-paned, arched windows and is capped with a bellcast copper roof surmounted by a weathervane. The J.A. Kimberly Memorial Library us significant under criterion C as an outstanding example of the Georgian Revival style of the 1930's. Constructed of finely laid random ashlar limestone, the Kimberly Memorial is distinguished by its carefully proportioned facade whose meticulously crafted wooden windows, elegantly attenuated portico, handsome cupola, chaste millwork are juxtaposed with the rough stone walls to create the refreshingly original and engaging informal effect characteristic of the best period design of the later 1920's, 1930's, and 1940's. The building is virtually unaltered on the exterior wall and retains a high degree design integrity. It is the finest example of a late Georgian Revival style building in Appleton. |
