NOTES
Additional Information:A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. Originally an early brick front gabled tavern with segmental arch window heads having triple course brick segmental arched lintels. One-story shed roof addition in the rear is original to the house. Full width shed roof front porch was enclosed and covered in stone veneer at a later date. All windows have cut stone sills. Related building: 1603 University Ave. (77/24) next door. Hochgreve Tavern was a franchise of Hochgreve Brewery owned by Louis Brice. The Hochgreve Tavern was completed in 1899 and a commercial storefront addition was built adjacent to it approximately a decade later. The Hochgreve Tavern was a franchise bar of the Hochgreve Brewery owned by Louis Brice and appears to be the only one remaining in Brown County. As a franchise bar, the tavern was ‘tied’ to the brewery and sold primarily its products. This arrangement was common for large urban breweries at the turn of the century. When completed, the tavern was on the far northeast side of Preble adjacent to a rail line and farmland. August Hochgreve established the Bellevue Brewery in Allouez with Henry Rahr in 1857. Rahr left in 1865 to start his brewery in Green Bay and Hochgreve continued on his own until he died in 1893. His widow, Caroline took control forming the Hochgreve Brewing Co. in 1894. The brewery was one of the two largest in Brown County at the turn of the century, producing a range of products, but focused on German-style bock beer. The company closed in 1949. The Hochgreve Tavern appears to have remained a bar throughout its entire history to the present.
