Segmental arched windows with radiating brick and stone voussoirs; stone lintels; belt courses and mouldings; projecting metal cornice; corbeled brick beneath the cornice and parapet with battlements above the cornice. Exterior surface is broken by brick piers and a projecting entrance bay. One service door has been filled in with a store front and a second door remains on the front facade.

Still retaining its architectural character and having undergone minimal alteration, the Gund Stables is the best preserved structure remaining from the Gund Brewery operation. Served as Wisconsin National Guard Armory until about 1960, after Gund went out of business.

John Gund played an important role in the industrial growth of La Crosse. He established his Empire Brewery as part of the Gund Brewing Company in 1872. Gund's brewery grew to be very large, occupying a five acre site at the time of a disastrous fire which broke out in 1897. C.F. Struck redesigned the brewing company in 1898. Gund remained in business until 1920 when the Heileman Company bought the firm.

Related buildings: Racking House (2016 South Avenue); Gund Office Building (2111 South Avenue); Bottling Works (2130 South Avenue); Malt House (2104 South Avenue). Also 2126 South Avenue.

The Stable building was constructed by Ed Wallace, local contractor.
