| Additional Information: | A brick and stone structure, the former Sixth Ward School includes both Classical and Romanesque details. The nearly square structure is characterized by projecting elements which flank a central entrance area which includes a main entry framed by a round stone arch. Stone is also used on the lower portion of the building and above the bands of windows. A prominent cornice, hip roofs, and a dormer are additional features. In 1937-38 a brick addition was completed and is attached to the south wall of the original building. The Sixth Ward School, No. 1 was constructed in 1904 and enlarged in 1937-38. In March of 1950 the Board of Education offices were moved to the second floor of the building, while the Veterans' Administration occupied the first floor. In 1981, the Board of Education occupied the entire building. As of 1987, the Board of Education was no longer in the building. |
