| Additional Information: | Late example of Neo-Classical Revival with Art Deco dedorative motifs. Original building has two-story, symmetrical facade facing east with projecting, centrally placed entrance pavilion. Large 6/6 light windows above entrance door with balconet. Entrance door has ribbed concrete molding above lintel in Art Deco fashion. Windows are 6/6 light, 10 bays wide on either side of entrance pavilion and terminate in additional ebtrance doors at either end of main facade. Whole building has wide concrete cornice terminating facade with concrete frieze using scallop and dart decorative pattern and an elaborated concrete cross above each entrance door. Third, or attic floor above cornice may be a later addition, and is terminated with a simple cement coping. St. Joseph's Catholic School, located at 1224 Twelfth Avenue, was completed in 1938 adjacent to a parish church and rectory. The school and non-extant church were designed by Geniesse and Connell with eight classrooms. A new chapel was added in 1950 and a large addition to the south, designed by architect John Sommerville to match and duplicate the original school building, was completed in 1958. Levi A. Geniesse, the son of Green Bay builder Louis Geniesse, opened an architectural office in the city in the late 1920s. Geniesse primarily worked alone but partnered with John F. Connell for a short time in the late 1930s. Most of his work was limited to the design of single-family homes in Green Bay and the surrounding areas. He continued to work as an architect until his retirement in the early 1960s. |
