| Additional Information: | A 'site file' exists for this property. It contains additional information such as correspondence, newspaper clippings, or historical information. It is a public record and may be viewed in person at the Wisconsin Historical Society, State Historic Preservation Office. 2018- No longer extant. 2016- "The Berlin Street Bridge (P-68-717) is a single-span stone arch bridge that carries County Highway (CTH) E/Berlin Street over the Crystal River in the city of Waupaca. It was constructed in 1906. No plans or information regarding the engineer and builder were able to be found. The bridge is constructed of rubble fieldstone. It is approximately 38 feet in length and 31 feet wide, and has flared wing walls at each end. The bridge was widened by about ten feet in the 1960s, which was accomplished by extending the structure to the south with a concrete round arch addition. The ring stones, or voussoirs, forming the segmental arch on the north elevation are limestone. The arch is accentuated by a thin, limestone archivolt, though a large portion of the aesthetic feature is missing. Mortar was used to fill the resulting gaps in the structure. A parge coat has also been applied to the upper two feet of the structure. The arch of the addition is lined with corrugated metal. The wing walls on the north side of the structure are constructed of stone and those on the south side are concrete, consistent with the materials composing each elevation. Standard metal guardrails are present on each side of the bridge deck. Historically, the barriers were likely metal pipe railings, such as those which remain extant on the Mill Street Bridge (P-68-704), a stone arch bridge in the nearby village of Scandinavia." -"Berlin St. Bridge (P-68-717)", WisDOT#6844-14-00, Prepared by Commonwealth Heritage Group (Greg Rainka), sub-contracting to OMNNI Associates (Kristofer Olson), 2016. stone arch bridge |
