NOTES
Additional Information:ROUND ARCH ENTRANCE W/ KEYSTONE AND FANLIGHT ABOVE RECESSED DOOR ON EAST ELEVATION OF ELL. BRICK BELTCOURSE ABOVE HIGH FOUNDATION.

[Date Cnst:(DATESTONE)]

2012- "The Buttles School building was constructed in 1928 in the Craftsman-style. It is L-shaped in plan with an asphalt-shingled, hip roof and red brick exterior. The front elevation faces east and is asymmetrical in plan. An octagonal cupola rises from the center of the roof ridge. The school entrance is located in the east elevation of the ell, which projects from the principal mass of the school building. The entrance is contained in a round arched door sutTound with a round arch transom and side lights. A name stone is located immediately above and diamond shaped date stones are located on either side of the entrance above the brick belt course, which accentuates the high foundation. A bank of 6 windows is set above the high foundation and is the predominant feature in the east facade of the principal mass of the school building. Three windows are located in the high foundation of the east facade."

2005- "This previously surveyed one-to-six room Craftsman Style schoolhouse is still in highly intact and well maintained condition,
although it is no longer in use as a school. The building has an L-plan, a poured concrete foundation, and walls that are clad in
reddish brown brick and which are sheltered by the building's asphalt shingle-covered multi-hip roof. The school has a raised
basement story and a much taller principal story and both stories are accessed by a main staircase that is housed in a projecting ell
that comprises the right (north) third of the school's asymmetrically designed east-facing main facade. The classically derived main
entrance in the first story of this ell is flanked by sidelights and is surmounted by a large fanlight and it is especially notable for its
design. Windows throughout the building also appear to be intact as well.

According to stone plaques located on the main facade of the school, this building was built in 1928 as the Buttles School of School
District No. 4. Other small schools of similar age and design located elsewhere in Wisconsin that exhibit a less high degree of
integrity have already been listed in the NRHP for their architectural significance as intact examples of a threatened property type
and for their historic significance as examples of buildings that are closely associated with the history of primary education in their
local context and it is very likely that the Buttles School is potentially eligible for these reasons as well."
