| Additional Information: | St. Mary's School is a two story brick structure with simple Collegiate Gothic Revival style details. The buildign has a flat roof and sits on a raised foundation. The slightly projecting entry pavilion features a gable parapet, brick corbeling, a tudor-arched window opening and an entrance under a complex tudor arch. The windows punctuating the brick walls are simple light sashes set primarily in pairs. A stone belt course separates the raised foundation from the first story. In the basement story are small single-pane sashes. The entrance is partially enclosed with wood panels and a modern entry door. A tripartite opening of sashes with transoms sits above the main entrance. The St. Mary's School was the third school building on the site, built after the old stone school burned in 1922. It was designed by the La Crosse architectural firm of Parkinson and Dockendorff. It remained in operation into the 1990s. The school building is architecturally significant because it is a good example of an elementary school building designed by noted Wisconsin architects. It was the largest and most important elementary school building constructed in the Town of Jefferson prior to World War II. The building is also significant because it adds to the historical significance of the St. Mary's Complex. It was an important part of the religious life of the congregation, which was primarily made up of ethnic Germans. Internet research found that this building was demolished between 2010 and 2013. |
