NOTES
Additional Information:ARCHITECTURAL SIGNIFICANCE: Excellent example of small commercial building of this date. Note excellent corner entrance and Colonial Revival details on cornice and windows surrounds. Construction date, 1895. (A, 1) L .C. Kaiser, Builder. (A, 1) E.L. Hasting, Owner, 1895. (1) HISTROCIAL SIGNIFICANCE: The Eil. Husting Company manufactured soda, water, root beer, and carbonated beverages and was established in 1877. (2, 3) 2022: The E.L. Husting building was constructed in 1877 and is a two-story, Neoclassical, commercial building with a large 1895 addition located on the side (south) elevation. The building is clad in cream brick and the foundation is not visible. The flat roof is surrounded by a dentilated cornice and features a triangular parapet upon which a plaque reading “E.L. Husting” is located. Windows located on the front (west) facade are primarily fixed, one-over-one, wood sash with stone sills and arched upper panes and brick lintels. The lower portion of windows located on the first story have been downsized, as have the windows located on the exposed section of the building’s rear (north) elevation. A four-light window is located on the building’s first story under the parapet where the original entryway was located. Windows located on the exposed section of the building’s rear (north) elevation have been completely infilled. A replacement arched recessed entryway accessible by a set of concrete stairs is located at the center of the west elevation. An 1895 addition with a footprint larger than the original 1877 building is located on its south elevation; it faces south onto Vliet Street. It is clad in cream brick and has a flat roof that is encircled by a patterned brick parapet. A brick chimney is located near the addition’s southwest corner. Cornices are located on both the first and second stories. A concrete frieze encircles each story below the cornice, and the frieze on the second story is decorated with garlands painted in green. Windows are a mix of fixed, one-over- one, double-hung and wood, two- or three-over-one, with wood sash on the building’s south elevation. Infilled windows are located at the basement level of this elevation. Additional fenestration is confined to the building’s side (west) elevation and consists of wood and replacement, metal, one-over-one, double hung windows and replacement, metal, two-over-one, casement windows. Windows throughout the building have stone sills and those located on the second story have decorative stone lintels. A corner entrance that now functions as the building’s primary entryway is located on the southeast corner. The replacement wood door is flanked by decorative colonettes, which also surround the windows on the first story of the facade. A c. 2005 metal pole building addition is located on the north (side) elevation of the original 1877 portion of the building. It has a shed roof and is on a poured concrete foundation. It is accessible via a metal door located on the side (west) elevation and has no fenestration. Alterations made to the building since its prior survey in 1982 are limited to the pole-building addition, replacement of some windows, and the door on the 1895 addition. The E.L. Husting Co. was founded in 1877 by Eugene Husting, an immigrant from Luxembourg, Germany, who settled in Milwaukee. The company brewed beer until 1918, when impending prohibition laws forced it to transition to the production of soda. Following the end of prohibition in 1933, the company returned to distributing beer and other alcoholic beverages until its closure in 1970.
