This district, containing 60 buildings constructed between 1864 and 1921, reflects the community's rise from a wilderness supply point to a leading mercantile center. The structures, built of wood, stone and brick, are mostly Italianate or Romanesque influenced, with some Classical Revival, Art Deco and Second Empire styles. The public square, named for Mathis Mitchell, anchors the west end of the district. |
