| Paul Kuehl House 1050 North Second Street, Platteville, Grant County Architect: Paul Kuehl Date of Construction: 1937 The Paul Kuehl House was constructed in 1937 in a picturesque Tudor Revival style that displays distinct references to the Rustic style of architecture popularized by the National Park Service and the Civilian Conservation Corps in the first half of the twentieth century. Designed by Paul Kuehl, its original owner and a mechanical engineer, the building features a rough-cut, semi-coursed stone exterior; an irregular roof form featuring multiple, steeply-pitched gables with low eaves; and multiple wall and gable dormers that provide increased living space within the building’s compact interior plan. The house utilizes natural textures and materials in place of highly detailed, superficial ornamentation – a hallmark of the Rustic style. The house is particularly distinctive as the only Tudor Revival house recorded in the city of Platteville and the only documented house in the city that incorporates elements of Rustic architecture. This is privately owned. Please respect the privacy of the owners. |
