Peniel Chapel
W9644 Zoar Road, Town of Eldorado, Fond du Lac County
Date of Construction: 1856
Peniel Chapel is a significant for its deep association with the Oshkosh Welsh Settlement (Settlement), and the area of Social History for its importance as a social and community hub for Welsh people in the region. In 1847, traveling from present-day Waukesha with the oppression of like he therethe British landowning class in Wales fresh on their minds, the founders of the Settlement planned to create an agrarian community of Welsh farmers, where Welsh was the language of business, education, and worship. For these founders, a critical component of Welsh life was the church, which dominated their lives not only Sundays but nearly every day of the week, and was intertwined with Welsh leisure and social activities.
Peniel Chapel, constructed in the Eldorado township in the southern part of the Settlement in 1856, functioned as a religious and social center where Welsh-language religious services, community events, festivals, and social clubs were essential to establishing the Settlement’s Welsh identity. Welsh migration to Wisconsin peaked in the late nineteenth century.
By the Settlement’s centennial in 1947, only two of the five original houses of worship, Peniel and Bethesda Church, remained. As future generations of Welsh assimilated to the increasingly multicultural community surrounding the Settlement, Peniel Chapel played an important role in preserving many aspects of Welsh culture, most notably through annual festivals. The largest of these, the Gymanfa Ganu, or singing festival, is the longest running such event in the state. It has been instrumental in preserving Welsh musical traditions, especially the practice of Welsh four-part congregational hymn singing. Peniel’s congregation was disbanded in 1977, and most of the congregation relocated to Bethesda, which remains an active church. Peniel continues to be used as a performance venue that still hosts its annual Gymanfa Ganu and other Welsh cultural and musical events. It retains integrity in its agrarian setting, design, feeling, and continued association with preserving Welsh ethnic heritage in the region. The interior of Peniel is particularly well preserved, with furnishings and finishes dating to the nineteenth century.
