SUMMARY
Old Main Street Historic District
Generally consisting of Main Street between State Street and 5th Street, Racine, Racine County
Dates of contributing buildings: 1847-1929

The Old Main Street Historic District was listed in 1987 and amended in 1996 to amend the building count to 73 contributing and 14 non-contributing resources (NRIS # 87000491). This additional documentation is being submitted to update the status of three (3) buildings within the district. At the time of listing in 1987 and at the time of the first amendment in 1996, these buildings were non-contributing due to alterations to the façade. The façade changes were from outside the period of significance and adversely affected the integrity of the buildings.

Subsequently, the exterior of these buildings have been returned to their historic appearance, through the removal of the later covering on the facades. Due to this work, these buildings now contribute to the significance of the district. The addresses of the subject buildings are: 401 Main Street (Gorton & Buffham Building); 403-405 Main Street; and 407 Main Street. The historic names associated with the other two buildings is not known. This additional documentation seeks to amend the district to include these buildings as contributing resources. With this change in place, the current count is now 76 contributing and 11 non-contributing resources.
