Lieutenant Colonel Philip F. La Follette and Captain William Kurkeet, of Madison, Wisconsin, chatting at Camp Cable, near Brisbane, Australia. La Follette was the 27th (1931 to 1933) and 29th (1935 to 1939) Governor of Wisconsin. When war was declared, he joined the U.S. Army serving on the staff of General Douglas MacArthur.

Robert Doyle was a civilian war correspondent for the Milwaukee Journal during World War II, covering the experiences of Wisconsin troops in the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, an infantry division of the United States Army National Guard. The "Red Arrow" Division consisted mainly of soldiers from Wisconsin and Michigan.
