ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The tobacco companies used trade cards to advertise their products during the late 19th century. Used to stiffen the box, the cards became a powerful advertising method by printing the brand name of the cigarettes and a picture of a larger series. The cards covered many subjects, but certainly theatrical stars were well represented. Many other subjects including wildlife and sports were covered during the period of cigarette trade cards, 1870s-1890s. These cards were meant to be collected and were attractively printed as photographs as well as chromolithographs. Chromolithography was a printing process that used a separate limestone plate for each color.
