Gettysburg Farmhouse

Gettysburg Farmhouse | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Stereograph of the farmhouse of Abram Bryant, a free black man who lived near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. An African American man is standing near the porch and another man is sitting on the left with his hat on the ground. This card was purchased at Brady's studio by Lucius Fairchild probably in October 1863. Fairchild, who had commanded the 2nd Wisconsin at Gettysburg, wrote on the stereograph that it was General Meade's headquarters, an error he must have learned from Brady who mistakenly identified this image in later editions of his Gettysburg work. It was a logical mistake. Bryant's house was located about 100 yards from Meade's headquarters which was also a white farmhouse.
