Promotional card created to advertize land in northern Wisconsin Caption: STREET SCENE IN MEDFORD, TAYLOR COUNTY, WISCONSIN. - This view of one of the business streets of Medford will perhaps serve to give some idea of the commercial importance of this enterprising city. Medford is the county seat of Taylor County, and has a population of something over 2,000, being surrounded by one of the most magnificent farming counties in the State. It will always continue to be a growing business center. Business enterprises of various kinds are being established continuously, There are here a large tannery, a saw mill, stave and heading factory, excelsior factory, roller flour mill, brewery, cheese factory, two state banks, good schools and several churches of various denominations. |

Part of the promotional materials created by the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company Land Commissioner to publicize the sale of land in northern Wisconsin, primarily in Price, Taylor, and Ashland counties, owned by the railroad, circa 1895. One side of the card has illustrations of farming conditions, crops, forest resources, homesteads, small towns, and rural scenes in northern Wisconsin. A number of the illustrations are from photographs made by Harvey J. Perkins for "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker" and "Hand book of Price County." The reverse side of the card has text touting the abundance of resources available in northern Wisconsin, some of which was taken from "Northern Wisconsin: a hand-book for the homeseeker," edited by William A. Henry. |
