Corn Crops in Taylor County
The front (top) and back (bottom) of a promotional cards showing the plentiful corn crops of John Carstens, created to attract farmers to the agricultural land in northern Wisconsin. The caption bellow the photography reads, "CORN CROPS IN TAYLOR COUNTY - As evidence of the productiveness of the soil, we present this view of growing corn. It is not claimed that the climate of Northern Wisconsin is especially adapted to the growing of corn. It is true, however, that in all general farming the corn crop will always have an important place. It can be grown and matured in Taylor County as successfully as in almost any part of the State." The reverse side reads: "Go to a New Country." There was a time when with labor as his only capitol an energetic and preserving man might establish himself in any business with which he was familiar and finally gain for himself a competency. It can't be done now. It requires cash and, in most cases, lots of it. Even the business of farming, a man cannot undertake empty handed. Prices of lands are high while prices of farm products are low, and to rent is ruinous. Only in a new country can conditions be found which are favorable to the working man. In Taylor, Price, and Ashland Counties, Wisconsin land is cheap and prices are good. There it is not necessary for one who buys a piece of land to go hopelessly in debt. He can make more than a good living without the aid of expensive machinery. He can develop with the country and should he have some means at the start, so, much the better. The hardwood farming lands of the WISCONSIN CENTRAL RAILROAD COMPANY are unexcelled and are being rapidly taken up. Don't fail up make a trip up this fall to look the country over. Write for full particulars, maps, illustrated pamphlets and excursion dates." |
