Horse-Drawn Wagons on Rutted Dirt Road
| Two horse-drawn wagons travel toward each other on a rutted, dirt road. It appears that a woman wearing a bonnet and shawl is driving the nearer wagon, with a man driving the far wagon. A split-rail fence is on the left. State Normal School buildings can barely be seen on the left and others in the background. This image was entered in a 1898 competition sponsored by the League of American Wheelman to identify the nation's worst road conditions. The purpose of the competition was to gather evidence of the need for better roads. The donor, Otto Dorner of Milwaukee, was the national chair of the league's road improvement committee. |
