Backside of a fund-raising certificate of the U.S. Sanitary Commission appointing Emily Grouch a sergeant in the Army of the American Eagle. The Commission facilitated home-front contribution to the Union Civil War effort. This fund-raising drive sold pictures of the bald eagle Old Abe, mascot of the Wisconsin 8th Infantry. The certificate's text describes how the fund-raising program works, who Old Abe was and why boys and girls should join. |
