Dombrowski Leaves Jail
James Dombrowski (center), head of the Southern Conference for Human Welfare (SCHW), leaving the Birmingham jail with Doris Senk and the Rev. C. Herbert Oliver. Dombrowski and Senk were arrested because they and other whites had violated the city's segregation laws by entering the wrong door of Oliver's African American church. Rev. Oliver was arrested for allowing unsegregated seating in the church which he was serving in a pastoral capacity. The following Tuesday, Judge Oliver Hall dismissed the charges saying that his courtroom did not have signs separating the races. |
