Samuel Davis Sturgis I
Samuel Davis Sturgis, father of Nina Dousman. Born July 11, 1822 and died July 28, 1889. Samuel Sturgis graduated from West Point in the class of 1846 and served in the Mexican War, Civil War, and Indian Wars. During the Indian War, he commanded the United States Sixth Cavalry and Seventh Cavalry. His last assignment was as commander of the Soldier's Home at Fort Meyer near Washington, D.C. |

The Villa Louis Collection documents the family of Louis and Nina Dousman during the latter quarter of the nineteenth century. The Dousman family, descendants of fur trade magnate Hercules Dousman, cultivated the life of country aristocracy and amassed the trappings of Victorian wealth and grandeur along the banks of the Mississippi River. |
