Here the crowd moves in on Jimmy Hicks (center, wearing a hat), the managing editor of the <i>New York Amsterdam News</i>. The photographer is Earl Davy of the <i>Arkansas State Press</i>. A few minutes later both men were beaten and Davy's camera smashed. Hicks was slugged from behind moments after the photograph was taken.
