Violence at Little Rock
Violence against African American journalists covering the Little Rock integration story. Here the crowd moves in on Jimmy Hicks (center, wearing a hat), the managing editor of the New York Amsterdam News. The photographer is Earl Davy of the Arkansas State Press. A few minutes later both men were beaten and Davy's camera smashed. Hicks was slugged from behind moments after the photograph was taken. |
