ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
A note attached to the back of the photograph reads, "Attention of Mr. H.D. MacDonald, Experimental Dept. Gentlemen: In compliance with your favor of the 13th inst., I will endeavor to give you a brief outline of the development of the truck and tractor built by the Morton Mfg. Company. Enclosed herewith are several pictures of the first machines which were built about May 1899. This was my original idea of the gasoline truck and tractor. The truck was the first machine built, and from this the friction drive transmission was developed and perfected to a point suitable for heavy hauling. This design of power transmission, on account of having to use the stationary type of motor, was then incorporated in a tractor, picture of which is herewith enclosed. This tractor was designed and built principally to take the place of the portable engine and pull threshing machines, hay balers, etc. The Morton Manufacturing Company sold approximately 55 or 60 of this type. Experimental and development work was continued so as to perfect the machines to a higher degree. Patents were not issued on these machines until August 5, 1902 and April 21st, 1903. Trusting this is the desired information, I am Yours very truly, (Signed) S.S.Morton"
