Joe McCarthy Investigates
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy, now chair of the Senate Investigating Committee, arrives at a New York City hotel to begin hearings on alleged Communist espionage within the Army Signal Corps Laboratory located at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey. As usual, McCarthy had with him a briefcase bulging with documents. The original caption distributed to the media with this photograph stated that "three persons reportedly named as being involved in the ring were to be questioned by the senator, who said that the trio was named by a mystery witness who promised to 'tell all' about the spy group." As usual McCarthy released information to the press to advance his own purposes. |
