Dean Acheson | Photograph | Wisconsin Historical Society
Dean Acheson, Secretary of State during the administration of Harry S. Truman, 1949-1952, who played a crucial role in defining U.S. foreign policy during the early years of the Cold War. In this exquisite portrait, Acheson seems to epitomize the liberal establishment elite hated by Joseph R. McCarthy and other anti-Communists. Acheson won their enmity for his support of Alger Hiss and other Communist spies alleged to be State Department employees.
