Under the leadership of Thomas E. Coleman, who hated the La Follettes and who strongly opposed the Progressive Party's return to the Republican fold in any leadership capacity, the convention endorsed La Follette's opponent Joseph R. McCarthy. La Follette lost in the primary, thus ending his family's long tenure in the Senate. McCarthy's victory in the general election then launched his career in Wisconsin politics. |
