Samuel Foster Haven, Anthropologist

Vignetted carte-de-visite portrait of Samuel Foster Haven (1806-1881), Massachusetts anthropologist, librarian, and archaeologist. Haven is best known as the librarian for the American Antiquarian Society from 1838 onward, a position he held for over 40 years. While in that position, he collected important artifacts from the founding of American civilization, most importantly from the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Handwritten inscription on the bottom reads, "S.F. Haven, 1866." |
