After his election to the Senate, McCarthy's rank at the time of his enlistment became an issue. McCarthy said he enlisted as a private. His critics charged this was a lie meant to enhance the appearance of patriotism and that McCarthy enlisted as an officer and resigned as a captain. As a judge, McCarthy could have been entirely exempted from military service. |
