McCarthy, the Primary Winner
Senator Joseph R. McCarthy speaking with reporters at LaGuardia Airport shortly after his victory over Len Schmitt in the Wisconsin Republican primary. McCarthy had felt so confident of his victory margin that he had been touring other states to campaign in behalf of other anti-Communist Republicans. McCarthy told reporters at the airport that he would campaign for Dwight Eisenhower if asked by the candidate. Eisenhower had already formed a personal dislike for McCarthy, and rather than asking for McCarthy's aid, Eisenhower did everything he could to avoid being seen with the senator. |
