Engraved portrait of Charles W. Short (1794-1863), Kentucky botanist.  Worked at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, 1825-38.  The plant genus "Shortia" was named in his honor by Asa Gray.  Amassed large herbarium (15,000+ specimens), given to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia upon his death.  Shown here in an oval frame, holding an unrecognizeable book.  Reproduction of his signature appears under the image.
DESCRIPTION
Engraved portrait of Charles W. Short (1794-1863), Kentucky botanist. Worked at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, 1825-38. The plant genus "Shortia" was named in his honor by Asa Gray.
