Charles W. Short, Botanist
Engraved portrait of Charles W. Short (1794-1863), Kentucky botanist. Worked at Transylvania University in Lexington, Kentucky, 1825-38. The plant genus "Shortia" was named in his honor by Asa Gray. Amassed large herbarium (15,000+ specimens), given to the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia upon his death. Shown here in an oval frame, holding an unrecognizeable book. Reproduction of his signature appears under the image. |
