Photograph taken for International Harvester's Agricultural Extension Department. Folder: Live Stock The photograph caption reads: "It is a mistaken idea to believe that because stock which is kept quiet will put on flesh faster than stock which takes lots of exercise, stock which is kept in knee deep mud will not move around much and therefore put on fat rapidly. The exertion necessary for them to move from one place to another develops the muscles and makes them tough and at the same time requires just that much energy which should be building up the flesh. There was no one place in this feedlot where the solid ground seemed to be closer to the surface than eight or ten inches. This farm covers 1,000 acres and lots of it is hill land so it would have seemed advisable to turn the herd out on the hills for a few days until a large force of men with teams could have removed the top dressing on the lot and distributed the fertilizer over the farm land where it would have done much good." |
