The caption above the photograph is attributed to J.H.H. Lacher and reads: "This building has been a freight depot since 1851, when it was built by the Milwaukee and Waukesha R.R., Wisconsin's first railway, which was formally opened to traffic on Feb. 25, 1851, with a grand celebration culminating in a ball which was held in a large new stone building, which stood several hundred feet to the southwest, where the first railway cars were built in Wisconsin. The freight depot was connected with the passenger depot by a large stone arch, the whole constituting a large building. Two tracks ran thru the arch. In the early sixties the arch was torn down, because it was unsafe. Later the passenger depot was demolished and a new brick depot erected. Upstairs in the freight house, to the left of the telephone pole, was the directors' office of the M & W Ry, later known as the Milwaukee & Mississippi Ry. This picture was taken March 2, 1922, about seventy-one years after the erection of the building. The lime used in the construction of the wall is approximately as perfect as it was when finished, while the stone is as good and firm as new." |
