The textbooks were burned in protest against the difficult German sequence, or courses in German language, literature and culture, taught at Baraboo High School by Miss Christian Wright. The board of education had previously unanimously voted to discontinue the courses. Although anti-German sentiment related to World War I may have influenced the board's decision, the book-burning was not a political act so much as a senior class prank. |
