Information submitted by David Armstrong Via email 10/2014: This cottage is located within the Carcajou Shooting Club grounds. As I recall from my conversations with Halvor Skavlem's daughter, who I only knew as Mrs. Holme, this was his summer home. It was never a farm house, although you do see cows in what would be the front yard. The house faces north and the south side of the property ends on the shore of Lake Koshkonong. The interior was never finished, no insulation or interior wall coverings such as plaster. Just bare studs. There was a small shed on the property and inside were many stone, bone and deer antler tools. There was also a fair amount of flint stone also. Mrs Holme was an excellent arrow point maker. She actually made me an arrow point and then proceeded to teach me also. I was about eight or nine years old at this time. Mrs Holme lived in California and came to WI to spend her summers in this cottage. Her daughter Nancy would come to visit her and stay for awhile also. My father bought Mrs Holme's farm from her in the mid 1940's. The Carcajou Shooting Club owned the hunting rights to the farm and we were not allowed to hunt there. Dad sold the farm to Herschel Plue in 1957. I'm 75 now, but I still have many pleasant memories of the area. -David Armstrong |
