A portrait of Franklin Pierce, 14th President of the United States, 1853-1857.  Pierce was born on November 23, 1804 in Hillsboro, New Hampshire and died October 8, 1869 in Concord, New Hampshire.  He served in the New Hampshire legislature and then in the U.S. Congress as both Representative and Senator.   He was elected U.S. President as the candidate of the Democratic party.   His 11-year-old son was tragically killed in a train wreck just 2 months before he took office.  At the end of his term, the Democratic party refused to renominate him, believing he had been too controversial as President.
