Yankee-Built Greek Revival House
A Yankee-built Greek Revival frame house from the 1840s. The small dark rectangular plaque above the door is a Madison Mutual Insurance Company sign that informed volunteer fire fighters that their services would be fully compensated in the event of a fire. This company was founded in 1851 by a group of Yankee businessmen. Its main competitor, as represented in Dahl's pictures, was the Hekla Fire Insurance Company of Madison, a Norwegian-American enterprise. |
