McCormick-Deering No. 31-RW West Coast Special Harvester-Thresher
Farmer Frank Rakow harvesting corn with a McCormick-Deering no. 31-RW West Coast Special harvester-thresher (combine). Mr. Rakow and the No. 31-RW are working in a field of Egyptian corn on a 200 acre island farm leased by W.T. Jarrett from Liberty Farms Company. Original caption reads: "The delta region formed at the confluence of the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers is broken up into some forty of fifty large islands up to 20,000 acres in size which are protected by dikes and which are usually lower than the rivers. Irrigation is therefore easy, water being siphoned from the adjoining rivers or sloughs. Sub-irrigation, it is called. Since land is very fertile and water plentiful, huge yields prevails. Most of the islands are owned by corporations." |
