Part of a Military Road from Fort Crawford to Fort Howard

Map

As early as 1829, Michigan territorial officials began to urge the building of a road connecting Fort Howard at Green Bay, Fort Winnebago at the Fox-Wisconsin portage, and Fort Crawford at Prairie du Chien. The road was surveyed and built between 1832 and 1837 and was the first major road to be constructed in Wisconsin. This hand-drawn facsimile of an 1833 drawing by Lt. Alexander J. Center shows the area around Fort Winnebago and the portage. "Recorded on pages 668.669 Book B."
