Roundhouse and Wood Burning Locomotives

"The West Wisconsin Railway roundhouse at Eau Claire, ca. 1872. It was located about a mile north of the present Civic Center. Workmen in the foreground are building a new turntable to replace the earlier one, often call the "gallows." Locomotives in the stalls are Baldwin wood burners, all 4-4-0s, built in 1871. Headed out of stall 7, to the left, is engine No. 12 the "Geo. W. Clinton"; the engine headed into stall 6, with its tender missing and the main rods down, is engine No. 14, names for "Matt W. Carpenter"; and backed into stall 3 is engine No. 10, named the "D.A. Baldwin." Baldwin was one of the incorporators in 1871, of the St. Paul, Stillwater & Taylors Falls Railway. These engines all carried their same numbers even when they were taken over a few years later by the Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha in 1878." |
