Steamers on the Tributaries of the Mississippi

In August 1858, Hölzlhuber traveled up the St. Croix River to Stillwater, Minnesota, on the steamship Winona. He noted the upper Mississippi's tributaries were too narrow to admit steamships with two sidewheels. At Stillwater he marveled at the large sawmills loading lumber for shipment downriver. Here the single-smokestack Winona threads its way between high fir-covered bluffs. Taken from Hölzlhuber's description of the scene, translated by Vera Kroner.
