The following information is from the Ripon Historical Society.
There are published articles about two GAR Events in Ripon - G.A.R. stands for the Grand Army of the Republic which is an organization of Civil War Veterans.
The first GAR Event was in June of 1887 where the town presented a gala appearance of flags and other emblems to decorate residences and businesses. Former soldiers arrived a day early to setup their encampment and renew acquaintances that might be attending. People arrived on trains and by roadways to hear speeches, music, songs and participate in meals and military exercises.
The second large event was June 15-16, 1916 for a Golden Jubilee GAR Encampment. Once again veterans descended from two train stations in Ripon met by a large crowd of enthusiasts and general public. Free automobile rides were offered to veterans and local Boy Scouts volunteered to carry their bags. Hotels and Ripon College dormitories were filled. More than 1,000 veterans registered for the encampment and a crowd of people gathered for a parade through town.
