Map or Atlas
Charte Über de XIII Vereinigte Staaten von Nord-America
Detailed and ornate map of the newly formed United States. The borders of the southern states extend to the Mississippi River, though the states are only colored in east of the Appalachian mountains. Cities, towns, forts, mountains, marshes, swamps, lakes, and rivers are all shown, along with an extensive and detailed account of Native American tribes and land. Typical for the German cartographic school, Güssefeld depicts the mountains and wetlands pictorially, and fills in the western land with numerous illustrated trees. Lake of the Woods is labeled in French, English, and German. A list of prominent German communities appears in the Atlantic Ocean next to New Jersey. The wreath, topped with a hat, sword, and caduceus adorns the title cartouche. |
