A series of 24 oil on canvasboard paintings by Peter Whitebird during the Chippewa Indian Historical Project by St. Mary’s Indian School, Odanah, Wisconsin, on the Bad River Reservation, from a series of photographs taken by George L. Waite, circa 1927. The paintings depict a Chippewa man and woman constructing a birchbark canoe, showing successive steps, from tree chopping to first trial float.
