Gemini 7

The Gemini 7 space capsule in which astronaut James Lovell flew in 1965, seen here on display at the Wisconsin Regional Space Center. Although born in Massachusetts, Lovell was raised in Milwaukee, and he attended the University of Wisconsin-Madison before enrolling in the Naval Academy. Lovell was part of the second and third groups of astronauts selected by NASA. He flew in space four times: Gemini 7 and 12 and Apollo 8 and 13. Apollo 13, in which Lovell was slated to become the second man to walk on the moon, brought him national attention when the space craft suffered a nearly-fatal malfunction. In "Apollo 13," the motion picture about that mission, Tom Hanks portrayed Lovell. |
