Josh Sanford and Mother

Portrait of Josh Sanford as a child with his mother, Maude Decorah. Sanford served in the Army Air Corps during WWII and is credited with being the only Native American pilot to serve in China. Sanford eventually reached the rank of Captain, won the Fly Cross Award, and took part in at least 74 combat missions. Sanford's mother was a member of the Winnebago Tribe while Sanford's father was a member of the Seneca Tribe. |
